nordström since impressionism
and expressionism, which were to liberate color, the language
of color has constantly swayed between the concepts of colors
as material and the, somewhat rarer, idea of color as color.
i have chosen as my own method of working color as the immaterial,
space-creating factor. i apply oil paint in thick, greasy layers
to further increase its optical depth and lustre effects. my
use of color is related to function rather than to aesthetic
views. cubism, futurism, purism, and neoplasticismwere crucial
to the liberation of form. this development is still going on
despite the changing fashion trends in the traditional concept
of painting that repeatedly appear in the limelight of the mundane
art commerce and museum activity. the non-re- presentational
picture posesses innumerable means of expression that cannot
pass unnoticed by any creative artist. this fact can be seen
throughout the course of the development of the visual arts of
this century. the elements of the image exist simultaneously
on tht picture plane and in the picture space and they all contribute
to ist overall effect. for instance, the simultaneous interaction
of the space- creating factors; they appeal and repel, converge
and diverge, are concave and convex, and thus the picture gets
ist inner tension. the principle or the system that the picture
is built upon and which builds the picture, is the construction.
this is the uniting denominator in the picture, its contents
and ist identity.
